Why we made this

The Phase30 is built on the proven foundation of our rugged BA30 rim, sharing the same outer profile and impact-resistant beadwall shape. It’s constructed from a premium alloy that balances strength and weight, and features a fully welded seam for added durability that exceeds the strength of the rim profile, while being 100% airtight. The Phase30 forgoes the internal bracing structure found in the BA30, resulting in a weight savings of approximately 40–60g, depending on rim size. It’s a strong, reliable option for riders who prioritize weight savings without compromising on performance in key areas.

Chromag rims are built on this foundation

key features

Let's get you rolling

Oriented Nipple Bed

The Phase30 and BA30 feature an oriented bed to help align the nipple seat with the angle of the spoke. This helps reduce stress on the nipple and spoke, thereby creating a stronger wheel.

Robust Beadwall

All our rims are all made from premium grade aluminium. They are extruded to our unique design and refined ERD (Effective rim diameter) for the best tire fit and hold.

The BA30, Phase30 and Ally have a robust beadwall to add increased dent resistance and tire retention.

Material

The Phase30 and BA30 use 6069, this has a higher tensile and fatigue strength along with increased fracture toughness. It is also a bit more expensive.

The Ally uses 6061, whilst still a premium alloy it is slightly lower strength than 6069. As such more is used to compensate making the Ally slightly heavier.

Rim FAQ's

The v2 has been refined in several key areas while maintaining the same weight. It has a 20% more impact resistant sidewall, with re-distributed material for more vertical resilience and increased lateral compliance.

We have increased the bead wall thickness for increased pinch flat protection, as well as making the central channel wider for easier tire installation.

They both use our top end alloy with a fusion welded seam-ground join, and have a 30mm inner width.

The main difference is the BA30 has some extra internal bracing, making it stronger and a bit heavier.

If you're really on the fence, run a Phase on the front and BA on the rear.

The Phase and BA are fusion welded, and post ground which makes the join the strongest part of the rim!

The Ally is pinned at the joint, which is more simple and less labour intensive, but not as strong. The Ally is also slightly heavier as the alloy used has slightly less strength than that of the BA and Phase.

Wheels come pre-taped with tubeless valves installed.

All you need to do is install tires and sealant.

Our wheels are pre-stressed and ready to ride out of the box.

However, like all wheels there is a bedding-in period, so be sure to keep an eye on spoke tension after the first few rides.

Provided the rim does not have a crack, you can use an adjustable wrench to gently bend it back to help your tyres seat properly. Use a rag or an old inner tube to prevent scratching your rim, and be careful to avoid puncturing your rim tape!

You'll likely need to adjust spoke tension if your wheel has taken a hit hard enough to dent it.

Phase 30 front wheel

An excellent addition to the phase 30 rim I had laced up a while back. Great quality and looks sick!

So good, I put that sh*t on everything.

Been running Chromag wheels on every rig for a better part of a decade, super reliable, super strong!

Solid Rims

Phase 30 rims build up really nice, not the lightest but not the heaviest either. Certainly tough. Amazing for the price.

Fantastic

Honestly, these rims have been great over the past year I have owned them. Usually, I manage to go through 2-3 high-quality allow rims a season. Not these. They have only been trued once and are still holding strong. Definitely at the top of my list when looking at higher-quality alloy rims.

Solid mid-weight wheel

I switched to these, coming from a Stans Flow wheelset and have been impressed.
Rims: Coming from the Flow, There was a huge difference in the sidewall thickness, and these have been very resistant to denting. The finish is consistent, round and true out of the box. Setting up tubless was a breeze. Tire fit was what I'd expect them to be and they inflated, sealed and seated nicely. I suppose if you are hard on rims, you could go to the heavier BA version, but on my 140mm bike, these are great all around.
Hubs: These are not the highest engagement, but they are solid and chunky. I climb a lot and these engage well and I've never noticed a single slip. They are easy to rebuild and I noticed that they use much larger bearings than my last hubset which wasnt so reliable.
Build: These are wll built and come true and round out of the box. They do need re-tensioning after a half-dozen rides, but overal have been easy to keep running straight.
This is a great wheelset for the price!

Hot butter

These rims look nice, hubs sound great and construction is good quality. However, after only a handful of rides these things are so dented they wont seal a tubeless tire. Also they came with the rim tape so poorly installed it would not hold air. Not a big deal but when buying new stuff you just want it to work out of the box.

I am running these on a 140mm travel bike, I run 24-27 PSI with EXO+ or DD tires.

Do not recommend if you are ridding fast.

Sorry to hear about your experience. These rims are thicker than most and we use a premium aluminum. They are less likely to dent than most on the market. We'd love to have a chance to get you to try them again!

Solid & reliable

Overall pretty stoked on these, I run them front and back on my trail bike which I use in the park as well. Had to put them in the truing stand after a few weeks just to get them back up to tension, but I don't know of a factory built wheel where you wouldn't need to do that.
Got a few dings, but nothing straightening with an adjustable wouldn't fix. Still held air even before straightening.
The R4 hub is solid but nothing mind blowing. If it had more engagement would have given 5 stars.

Soft like cheese

These are beautiful rims, but after a week of riding I have so many dings that tubeless won't seal anymore. I'm running 27+ psi.... Disappointed.

The chromag hub is nice and seems reliable so far.

Take away...if you like to go fast on your trail bike, the phase 30 rim isn't for you

Hi Justin,
Sorry to hear about your experience. These rims are thicker than most and we use a premium aluminum. They are less likely to dent than most on the market. We'd love to have a chance to get you to try them again!
Alternatively, next time you could try our BA30 rim, which is our most burly rim.

Thanks,

Really Impressive

'-,I put these wheels on when I built up my Rootdown more than 18 months ago.
-,I don’t have exact stats but it’s been ridden hundreds of rides. Nearly all of them were in the Coast Mountains of BC, on rugged terrain ridden aggressively. Some were in very, very wet conditions.
-,Still the original tubeless tape and until a week ago the valves were great but they did get gummed up so bad they stopped working.
-,They have some scratches on the rims and many many on the spokes but they still look pretty good really.
-,I’m known to run absurdly low tire pressures like 12-15 PSI and no real dents to speak of.
-,I have intentionally never done any service to them at all.
-,Just recently I noticed the front bearings sound a little rough but the wheel is still running right and tight.
-,The rear wheel’s spokes have relaxed into some really bad spoke tension. Like bad…
-,Friday I bent the rear one just enough that I want to put them in the stand.

Great looking, great riding wheels that for me have been dang near indestructible and I've apologized to them a few times for how badly I smash them into things.

Solid

I know these are the lighter of the two but they've been nothing but reliable. Not all singing all dancing, but solid, easily repairable, and just do the job.
I've heard some people running a BA30 on the rear and a Phase on the front which isn't a bad idea, but Phase front and back has been fine for me.
Would have 5 star if they had more engagement but that's just me being fussy.

Great rims

Had these rims on my smuggler for 2 years All Mountain/the odd amateur enduro, Pemberton, Van Isle and Whistler bike park, only needed truing once. Lightish/strong/well made and Canadian... great rims!

Solid and trusted

Ive been using these rims for a few weeks now and have had 0 issues at all, immediately noticed my bike rolling and handling faster (may have been more due to my old rims/wheels). Have been running tubeless and choosing bad lines the whole time with no marks on them. Although it does make me wonder if they could be made slightly lighter.

O
Oliver

Hi,

quick question: Do you recommend the use of washers when building a wheelset with phase 30 rims?

Regards
Oliver

- Chromag Crew:

Thanks for your question. Our rims are strong, and we don't build our wheels with washers as the bed of the rim is plenty thick enough. However some wheel buidlers like to use them to reduce friction, and it does add a little bit of strength to that area.
